How to Protect Yourself

Scammers use phone calls, emails, text messages, social media, and other tactics to try to gain access to your financial information. Knowing what to watch for can help protect your money, your identity, and your Campus Credit Union accounts.

Important Reminder

Campus Credit Union will never initiate contact and ask for your online banking or mobile banking credentials, including your username, password, or one-time security code.

What scammers are trying to do

A common fraud tactic is called account takeover. This happens when a scammer impersonates a trusted organization and tries to trick you into sharing personal or account information. Once they gain access, they may attempt unauthorized transactions or use your information to steal your identity.

What is account takeover?

Account takeover happens when a scammer pretends to work for Campus Credit Union or another trusted business and convinces you to give them access to sensitive information.

Their goal is to gain entry to your accounts so they can move money or make unauthorized transactions.

How the scam usually starts

Many scams begin with a text message or phone call claiming there is suspicious activity on your account.

  • The scammer may say they are from a fraud department
  • They may ask you to verify a payment or transaction
  • They may offer to “cancel” or “refund” the transaction
  • They may claim to be from a retailer such as Amazon or Target

What they want from you

Scammers often try to collect the same key pieces of information needed to access your accounts.

  • Username
  • Password
  • One-time security code

How to spot a scam

Campus Credit Union may contact you about suspicious activity on your account, but we will never ask for confidential login information. If someone asks for your password, username, or one-time code, that is a major red flag.

Pause before responding Be cautious of phone calls, emails, or texts that create urgency or pressure you to act quickly.
Do not share credentials Never give anyone your online banking or mobile banking username, password, or security code.
Verify independently When in doubt, stop the conversation and contact Campus Credit Union directly using a trusted phone number.
Do not trust caller ID alone A local area code or caller ID that shows Campus Credit Union does not guarantee the contact is legitimate.

How to avoid account takeover fraud

If someone claiming to represent Campus Credit Union contacts you and asks for confidential information, treat it as suspicious. If you are on a phone call, hang up. If you received a text or email, do not click links or continue the conversation until you verify the message directly with us.

It is always better to be cautious. A quick call to Campus Credit Union can help confirm whether a message is legitimate.
